Your data is one of the most important components of your business. Without it, you can’t service your customers or your employees properly. Suffice it to say, backing up your data in case of a disaster is critical to the well being of your business. How do you know, then, that your data is backup up properly? Using what is known as the 3-2-1 backup strategy, Best Technology can help you set up a backup process which will ensure that your business can work through the most difficult data loss situations.
What is 3-2-1?
3-2-1 is an incredibly simple yet effective method which makes sure that at least one copy of your data is available should your primary data source crash or become otherwise unavailable. The strategy breaks down like this:
3 different storage media
2 locations
1 relationship
3 different storage media
Your backup copies should each be kept on different forms of storage media. One copy, for example, could be kept on a tape backup system, a second copy on an external hard drive, and a final copy on a storage server. This ensures that at least one form of media is available should any of the others fail (ex. bad tape drive or failed hard drive).
2 locations
Keeping multiple copies of your data won’t help you if they’re all in the same place. Should a fire occur at your business with every copy of your data in the office, you have a strong chance of having no backup available to restore your data from when you open your new or temporary location. Keep at least one of your backup data copies offsite in a secure location to guarantee you’ll have data available even if the worst happens. And don’t think a fire-proof safe is always the answer. We’ve pulled melted backup tapes out of safes that were fire-proof, but not heat-proof.
1 relationship
To avoid confusion with the backup process, have a relationship with a backup manager, somebody who can design, implement, and oversee your backup strategy from top to bottom. As a Dell and Symantec Partner, Best Technology can supply your complete backup solution, creating a backup plan tailored to your needs, procuring the necessary hardware and software to put that plan into action, and securely storing your offsite backups to ensure your business can recover from any disaster situation. To find out how Best Technology can help you implement the 3-2-1 strategy at your business, contact one of our technology consultants at 440-471-0344 or via our website.
