Why Most Anti-Junkmail Systems Fail (And Why Ours Doesn’t)

At Best Technology, we’ve been involved in a number of anti-spam projects over the last several years, and there are a number of truths about spam:

  • It’s a huge nuisance to most.
  • It costs American businesses a lot of money.
  • It is NOT a problem for everybody.
  • There are several ways to combat it, and some are better than others.

How most companies deal with spam is kind of like the way you deal with garbage collection: hand the duty to lowest bidder and just assume the job is going to get done.

There are several players in the anti-junkmail field, most notably Google, IronPort, GFI, and Barracuda. All of these services reduce the occurrence of junk mail, and some also offer anti-virus scanning of messages, too.  But each of these products approaches junkmail differently, and therefore yield varying degrees of success combatting the problem.

IronPort and Barracuda are packaged as appliances that you connect to your network. You are expected to maintain the appliance, and the junkmail comes over your Internet connection until it reaches the appliance, where it is scanned and usually disposed of. GFI’s MailEssentials is a very similar product, but  runs as a software solution, usually on the same server as your e-mail server software.

Google-based solutions run in Google’s data centers around the world, and don’t require you to house any special software or appliances in order to filter e-mail.  This approach has the unique benefit of not requiring transmission of junkmail over your Internet connection in order to be scanned, like the other products.  A second advantage of the Google-based approach is that it doesn’t rely upon blacklists, which can prevent you from receiving legitimate messages from your real-life contacts.  Instead, services based on Google’s technology, like our SecureMailPro, rely on an approach that uses recognition schemes called heuristics and signatures. This approach is far more effective in filtering spam email on an early and widespread basis.

In fact, our “catch rate” on spam e-mail is 99.89%, while our false positive rate (legitimate messages accidentally filtered) is less than one one-thousandth of a percent (0.001%).  Ask us about SecureMailPro.  We believe you’ll be amazed by the difference you see when you try it.
